I've decided to join the world of blogging. I have no idea why. But I suppose it's a good way to air some thoughts, frustrations, hopes, dreams...
So I participated in a local art walk the other night. I put my work up for one night in a shop in the city of Edmonds. A good number of people passed through, and there were a lot of nice comments about my work. But the one thing I couldn't help but notice was the fact that almost every person I talked to asked me if my photos were "real", or if I'd "faked" them in some way. I displayed a series of images of still water, such as this one. I had to explain that, for that particular image, the water was very calm and I managed to catch things just at the right moment. On the other hand, some of the images, such as this, were done with very long camera exposures, which has the effect of blurring the moving water.
Anyway, I found it fascinating, and a little irritating, that few people seem to trust the photographs they see anymore. Even those without any photography experience know that it's quite easy to Photoshop and fake something. So those of us who practice a "traditional" approach to photography and don't fake our images are left to do a lot of explaining and educating. (For an explanation of the proces that I do use, click here).
