The still, minimalist images of Michael Kenna and David Fokos really inspire me. Both specialize in black and white imagery, often choosing still water as their subject matter.
This image was shot on the Seattle side of Lake Washington at about 9am in a dense fog with relatively calm water. An exposure time of about 6 seconds adds to the mystical effect by blurring the water slightly. Sometimes images like this might require exposure times of minutes, rather than seconds.
I feel that this type of image stems from my early studies of theatre set design...where only the elements required to further the story are shown to the audience. This composition has nothing extraneous - just the very precise elements needed to make it a compelling image.
